Frequently Asked Questions

  • What all will be needed in order to complete my name change?

Just a few basic things! :

    • Marriage License
    • SS Card
    • Living Address
    • Mailing Address
    • Phone Number
    • Full Name (Maiden & Married)
    • Wedding Date
    • Name Of Wedding Venue
    • Employer (Position & Management Contact Information Included)
    • Email Address
    • Emergency Contact
  • What happens if our documents are lost?

First and foremost, if your documents end up getting lost in the mail, we sincerely apologize.  We would like to correct the issue with you.  Feel free to email us at contact@yournamechanged.com and we will make it right.

  • How can I check on the status of my name change order?

You can check the status of your order in 3 convenient ways. You can send us an email to contact@yournamechanged.com, you can set up a “Name Your Call-back Time” appointment to discuss status and anything else you might need to ask at a convenient time where YOUR appointment time is priority at 205 259 NAME, or you can simply call us at 205 259 NAME for a spur of the moment status update. We’ve created a customer experience like no other where EVERY CUSTOMER is a VIP and gets treated as such. Here at NYN you are treated just like you were on your wedding day, with all eyes on you!

  • How long will the process take to change my name?

Depending on several different variables such as: package chosen, location, turn time for each specific department, and unexpected situations it can vary from 2 weeks to 2 months at the very most.

  • Will I have to provide my Social Security number?

Nope. After NYN gets notification of your information and payment processing, you will then get a detailed email explaining the process and what all is needed to be mailed to us. Your social security card is one of the items that will need to be mailed in order to make things work efficiently for your benefit!

  • Will I have to submit any name change applications or make any visits myself?

Only ONE! Unfortunately, the Driver's License is the only one at the moment where an in-person visit, BY YOU, is required. But we will help you with the DMV visit to have forms filled out, appointments set, and a list of documents needed for you to minimize your time in that dreaded building! Other than that, everything else is handled on your behalf. That’s the whole point of the Name Your Name service and that’s what makes our service different than any others that don’t go to the lengths that we do at NYN. Our goal is to make the name change process as easy as it can possibly be, and that’s what we’ve done with our process.

  • Are there any additional fees?

There are absolutely NO HIDDEN FEES! What you see is what you get. The only thing additional, should you so choose, would be for the extra passport office fee (Passport card is $30, the Passport book is $110, and the Passport card and book is $140). That’s it!

  • When should I place my name change order?

You call the shots! You’re welcome to order it before you get married to start familiarizing yourself with the service and getting things together. But we can’t legally change your name for you until after you’re married and you have the marriage license in hand to send.

  • I’ve already started my name change process. Can NYN still help me?

Absolutely! You’ll just need to reach out and let us know before you elect to use our services. So that way we can understand where you are in your name change process and can better scope for efficiency.

  • I lost my passport, but still want a new one to reflect my new name.

This part can be tricky…. You will have to let the State Department know of your lost passport and then apply for new one in your current (not married) name. After you get the new one, we can then assist you in getting one that reflects your married name. If you have any further questions on this subject, don’t hesitate to email or call us!

  • How do I know if my passport is expired or not?

The rule of thumb for passports is 15 years. If the one you currently possess was issued within 15 years ago, it is still active and we can change the name on the passport for you. If it was issued over 15 years ago, you will unfortunately have to physically go in person for this one as no one can get a passport for you in this instance.

  • How will the name change process affect my Honeymoon or other travel?

If you selected the “I Do” package then you have nothing to worry about. If you, the bride, selected the “Honeymoon” package and booked something in your maiden name, then your photo ID (Driver’s License or US Passport) will have to match the booking information. That being said, we can start the name change process while you’re gone and we won’t need the Passport until you return relaxed and refreshed!

  • Will Name Your Name Work in My State?

Absolutely! Our service works in all 50 states and Washington D.C. and is tailored to your unique name change situation.

  • Will the Marriage License work?

Unfortunately, no. That is the item you get that allows you to get married. We will need the marriage certificate that proves you ARE married.

  • Should the Marriage Certificate have my married name on it?

It depends. Each county is different with the way they do marriage certificates. If there is nowhere to put your new married name, then you’re good to just put your maiden name. But…. If it mentions your new married name, you will have to put the new married name in order to use it to change your name

  • Is there any time limitation on changing name after marriage?

Nope! As long as you physically have the marriage certificate, you can change it 1 to 100 years after marriage. There are many brides we have come across that have waited years to change their name because of the hassle.

  • We had a wedding that was abroad outside of the US and we have an international Marriage Certificate. Will this work?

That sounds like fun! Yes. It is still a recognizable document by the US. The only caveat to that is if it is in another language, it will have to be translated and notarized first before it can be used.

  • What if I have a Green Card? Can I still use NYN?

Not a problem! You will first have to update your name on your Green Card. Then you can send us your Green Card along with a foreign passport for us to perform the service.

  • What if I purchased the wrong package?

No sweat! We can always credit you back the amount difference in packages if we need to, or you can always upgrade your package to full or include a passport name change as well. Email or call us anytime and we will make it right.

  • Can I buy a package as a Gift or Gift Card?

What a thoughtful wedding present! And Yes, you can! All you’ll have to do is select our gift card option at the top. You will then fill out your information (as the buyer) and the bride to be’s name and phone number. You select to pay and then you will receive an email confirmation along with your electronic gift card to print out and provide to the bride that includes instructions.
